Japan Conducts First Anti-Ship Missile Launch in Philippines

(MENAFN) Japan’s military carried out its first-ever surface-to-ship missile launch on Philippine territory during the Balikatan Exercise 2026, according to local reports on Wednesday, highlighting deeper defense coordination among regional allies.

As stated by reports, the Japan Self-Defense Forces deployed and fired a Type 88 missile system from Paoay in Ilocos Norte during the exercises. The missile reportedly struck the retired Philippine Navy ship BRP Quezon, positioned about 75 kilometers (46.6 miles) offshore, within roughly six minutes.

According to reports, the operation reflected Japan’s expanding involvement in the annual Balikatan drills, where it has moved beyond its previous observer role to participate directly alongside Philippine and US forces.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said the exercise showed growing interoperability between allied militaries and would contribute to strengthening the Philippines’ defense capabilities.

He also described the mission as highly complex, requiring detailed coordination and planning, while emphasizing that such exercises help improve preparedness for both military threats and disaster response operations.
