EPA Holds Back Chemical Approvals Amid MAHA Backlash Concerns

(MENAFN) The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reportedly holding back approvals for dozens of chemicals known as “forever chemicals” under Administrator Lee Zeldin, amid concerns about potential backlash from the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, according to reports citing anonymous sources.

The MAHA movement, associated with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., promotes reducing chemical exposure in the US food supply and broader environment. While generally aligned with Republican priorities, the group has reportedly challenged certain policy directions linked to the Trump administration.

The reported delays come amid a wider push by the administration of US President Donald Trump to roll back environmental regulations. However, in this case, officials are said to be proceeding more cautiously due to political sensitivity around chemical safety issues.

Zeldin has also been described as leading efforts to reverse a large number of existing environmental rules, part of what the EPA has characterized as one of the most extensive deregulatory agendas in US history, while simultaneously accelerating approval processes for some other chemicals.

Before taking office, he had pledged to clear a backlog of PFAS approvals inherited from the previous administration. PFAS—widely used in products such as nonstick cookware, firefighting foam, and electronics manufacturing—are commonly referred to as “forever chemicals” because they persist in the environment for long periods.

Scientific research has linked exposure to PFAS with a range of health risks, including cancer, immune system disruption, infertility, and other long-term medical concerns.
