Unidentified Projectile Strikes Tanker Near Dubai

(MENAFN) A tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile 31 nautical miles northwest of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the UK Office of Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported Monday.

The vessel's security officer notified authorities that the projectile struck the tanker on its starboard side, igniting a fire aboard the ship, UKMTO said.

"The crew are accounted for and safe. No environmental impact has been reported," the agency added.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

The strike represents the latest threat to maritime security in a region that has grown increasingly volatile since US and Israeli forces launched a large-scale offensive against Iran on Feb. 28 — an operation that has since killed more than 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has responded with a relentless campaign of drone and missile strikes directed at Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations that host US military personnel, further destabilizing the broader Middle East and sending shockwaves through global energy markets and international shipping lanes.
