Japan Experiences 5.8 Magnitude Earthquake
The tremor, occurring at a depth of 11.2 kilometers (6.9 miles), hit near Yamada, along the eastern coastline of Iwate province, at approximately 4:23 pm local time (0723 GMT).
The Japan Meteorological Agency indicated that the quake registered as a three on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, which ranges up to seven.
Authorities did not immediately report any tsunami alerts or damage caused by the earthquake.
This event follows a 6.6 magnitude earthquake that struck off Iwate province just a day earlier, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).
At that time, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning, which was subsequently canceled.
