Louvre Heist Exposes Security Failures in France

(MENAFN) Security protocols were deemed to have "failed" in thwarting a significant jewel robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris this past Sunday, according to the French Minister of Justice.

The incident, which has drawn criticism both locally and abroad, has significantly tarnished France’s international reputation.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed frustration over how the heist unfolded so easily.

He noted that "people were able to park a furniture hoist in the middle of Paris, get people up it in several minutes to grab priceless jewels and give France a terrible image."

His remarks highlight serious lapses in urban security enforcement and museum protection strategies.

The criminals, armed with power tools, infiltrated the world-renowned museum during daytime hours.

They absconded with eight treasures considered to be of immense historical and monetary worth.

The group made a swift escape on scooters, intensifying concerns over the museum's vulnerability despite its status as the most visited in the world.

Among the stolen items is a necklace featuring diamonds and emeralds that was reportedly a gift from Emperor Napoleon to his wife.

Authorities worry that unless the culprits are apprehended imminently, the jewels could be dismantled and illicitly transported out of France, making recovery nearly impossible.

In response to the incident, the museum has announced it will remain closed on Monday. Meanwhile, Darmanin assured the public in an interview with a radio that he is confident law enforcement will eventually capture the individuals responsible.

However, not all experts share his optimism. Chris Marinello, the CEO of Art Recovery International, voiced concern during an interview.

He warned that without swift action, the jewellery might soon be unrecoverable.

"There is a race going on right now," Marinello emphasized, suggesting that the first 24 to 48 hours are crucial in preventing the permanent loss of these invaluable cultural artifacts.
