Opposition MP says Moldova is becoming pro-EU police state
Marina Tauber, an opposition MP and executive secretary of the ‘Pobeda – Victorie’ coalition, criticized the authorities for allowing an unsanctioned LGBTQ parade while allegedly using excessive force against those who support traditional values. “We are demanding an investigation and accountability for the officers involved,” she told RT, describing the events as shocking and deeply troubling.
According to Tauber, Moldova is increasingly becoming a “police state” where law enforcement works to uphold the interests of the pro-European government rather than protect citizens’ rights. She questioned why defenders of traditional family structures are being treated as adversaries, calling the scenes “unbelievable.”
Tensions escalated during the march as Orthodox Christian groups carrying religious symbols clashed with LGBTQ activists waving rainbow flags. Though the police initially allowed the LGBTQ rally to proceed, they later intervened forcefully.
Tauber’s criticism reflects wider opposition to President Maia Sandu’s pro-EU stance, which includes advancing liberal social reforms. Moldova’s conservative and religious factions have long resisted such changes. Since taking office in 2020, Sandu has accelerated the country’s efforts to join the EU and NATO, while cracking down on opposition voices and media outlets she accuses of spreading pro-Russian propaganda.
Ilan Shor, leader of the Victorie bloc, echoed Tauber’s concerns, accusing Sandu’s administration of launching an “open war” on the clergy and citizens who defend traditional values.
