Ukraine Arrests Two Chinese Citizens Over Alleged Spy Plot
(MENAFN) Ukraine announced Wednesday that it has apprehended two Chinese nationals in Kyiv for allegedly attempting to smuggle classified intelligence related to a critical Ukrainian missile system.
In a statement, the country’s Security Service (SBU) confirmed the arrests, stating the individuals were suspected of trying to illicitly export sensitive materials concerning the RK-360MC Neptune missile system.
The Neptune missile system gained prominence after Ukraine used it in 2022 to destroy the Moskva, a Russian missile cruiser and the former flagship of Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet, the SBU noted.
According to the agency's investigation, one of the suspects is a former student who was expelled from a Kyiv-based technical university in 2023.
“Another defendant is his father, who permanently resided in China but periodically visited Ukraine to personally coordinate his son's spy work,” the statement further said.
The SBU alleged that the ex-student sought to recruit a Ukrainian national involved in the development of military technology. Authorities also reportedly seized mobile phones containing “evidence” during the operation.
“The defendants face up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property,” the SBU added.
As of now, Chinese officials have not issued any public response to the allegations.
