Putin claims Russia never banned gays
“We’ve only discussed banning propaganda. We’ve never spoken about outlawing non-traditional relationships,” Putin said. “Adults are free to live as they choose. We have always said that all people are equal.”
Putin defended the 2013 legislation that banned LGBTQ-related content aimed at minors, saying it was necessary to protect Russian society from what he called intrusive Western ideologies. That law was broadened in 2022 to include content directed at adults.
He argued that while Russia is a multicultural and multi-faith nation, most of its population upholds shared moral values. “If we abandon our traditional values, Russia risks losing its identity and, ultimately, its statehood — a very dangerous path,” he warned.
Putin also criticized what he termed “global liberalism,” claiming it has evolved into a new form of totalitarianism. He expressed hope that Russia’s firm stance would inspire people with similar views in the West, especially in Europe and the U.S.
