von der Leyen Warns of EU, China Relations

(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has cautioned that the relationship between the European Union and China may face further decline if Beijing does not explicitly denounce Russia for its actions in Ukraine.

During a session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, von der Leyen criticized China, accusing it of “de facto enabling Russia’s war economy,” and emphasized that the EU “cannot accept this.”

Von der Leyen stressed that China’s continued approach toward “Putin’s war” would be a crucial element in shaping the future of EU-China engagement.

She urged Beijing to “unequivocally condemn Russia’s gross violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders.”

The European Commission chief also took the opportunity to reprimand China for what she described as unjust economic conduct.

She claimed that China is “flooding global markets with cheap, subsidized goods,” with the intention to “wipe out competitors.”

In response, Beijing has repeatedly rejected accusations that it is aiding Russia with military supplies or backing in the ongoing conflict. “China is not a party to the Ukraine issue.

China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is objective and consistent, that is, negotiation, ceasefire and peace,” said Mao Ning, spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, in comments earlier this month, as reported by a news agency.
