Malaysia Reaffirms Support for BRICS
The country emphasized that AI should be utilized to promote inclusive progress across the region.
This stance follows a warning from U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, where he stated that any nation aligning itself "with the anti-American policies” of the BRICS alliance would incur an added 10 percent tariff.
“With Asean’s digital economy projected to hit US$2 trillion (US$1=RM4.231) by 2030, this is a golden opportunity that we cannot afford to waste,” said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
He stressed the importance of seizing this digital shift to propel regional development.
According to a government-affiliated news outlet, Zafrul highlighted Kuala Lumpur’s commitment to assisting local firms in boldly venturing into new international markets.
"Malaysia’s commitment is to strengthen a rules-based and inclusive trading system," he noted.
“Together, we build a more just and progressive global economic future,” the minister continued.
Zafrul was part of the official group led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders’ Summit held in Brazil.
BRICS member states have been increasingly considering alternatives to the U.S. dollar, particularly after Washington imposed sanctions on Russia in 2022 in response to its “special military operation” in Ukraine.
