Russia ink nuclear energy agreement with Burkina Faso
Russia and Burkina Faso have signed a new agreement to boost cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, focusing on joint initiatives involving radiation technologies and training specialists from the West African nation.
The deal was formalized on Thursday during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), with Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev and Burkina Faso’s Energy Minister Yacouba Zabré Gouba signing the agreement.
According to a Rosatom statement, the agreement marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties. Likhachev emphasized Russia’s readiness to provide advanced technologies and expert support for joint projects that promote sustainable development and regional energy security.
This agreement follows a roadmap signed in March 2024 between Rosatom and Burkina Faso’s Energy Ministry during the ATOMEXPO forum in Sochi. The cooperation will cover areas such as nuclear infrastructure development aligned with international norms, nuclear and radiation safety regulation, and the application of radioisotopes in sectors like medicine, agriculture, and industry.
Russia and Burkina Faso have been collaborating on nuclear matters since 2023, following a request from Burkina Faso’s interim president, Ibrahim Traore, to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia–Africa Summit in St. Petersburg.
In October 2024, Burkina Faso signed a preliminary deal with Rosatom to build a nuclear power plant, aiming to improve electricity access in a country with one of the lowest electrification rates globally.
Additionally, Rosatom’s renewable energy subsidiary, NovaWind, is constructing a 200-megawatt solar power plant in neighboring Mali. The $217 million project is expected to increase Mali’s electricity output by 10%.
Russia has also approved similar nuclear cooperation agreements with Mali, though those have not yet been officially signed.
