Indian MP states its ‘very difficult’ to take Pakistani denial on terrorism seriously

(MENAFN) Indian lawmaker Shashi Tharoor has dismissed Pakistan’s repeated denials of supporting terrorism, calling them implausible and inconsistent with the facts. Speaking to RT’s Rick Sanchez on Tuesday, Tharoor – who chairs India’s Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs – said Islamabad continues to harbor terrorist groups, particularly in its largest province, allowing them to run training camps without interference.

Tharoor argued that since the Cold War’s end, Pakistan has repeatedly denied links to terrorism, despite overwhelming evidence. He said that after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, Pakistan turned its support toward anti-India and anti-Afghan elements, providing them with weapons, training, and funding.

He cited the 2008 Mumbai attacks as a key example, highlighting intelligence that allegedly captured a Pakistani operative directing the attackers in real time. “Given such evidence, it’s very hard to take Pakistan’s denials seriously,” Tharoor said.

His remarks come in the wake of a four-day military exchange between India and Pakistan in May. Tharoor explained that India focused its retaliatory strikes solely on terrorist infrastructure, avoiding military or civilian targets. “When a nation is hit by terrorism, it must respond,” he stated.

Tharoor recently led an outreach mission to the Americas, where India dispatched teams to over 30 countries to correct what it saw as skewed media portrayals of the conflict with Islamabad. In Washington, he reiterated India’s openness to dialogue with Pakistan—provided it isn’t under coercion.

During the RT interview, Tharoor also commented on the Middle East, saying he was cautiously optimistic about recent de-escalation efforts between Israel and Iran. “If the ceasefire holds and flights resume to Tel Aviv, and Tehran stays calm, I think the world will be grateful,” he said.
