South Korea’s special counsel wants to put formal leader in prison

(MENAFN) South Korea’s special counsel investigating former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s brief imposition of martial law has formally requested a warrant to detain the ousted leader, a spokesperson for the investigation team announced Sunday.

Cho Eun-suk, the independent counsel heading the probe into Yoon’s alleged insurrection and related accusations, submitted the warrant request to the Seoul Central District Court.

The warrant includes charges such as obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and falsifying official documents, the spokesperson explained.

The purpose of the detention request is to keep Yoon in custody for an extended duration—at least 20 days.

Since launching its investigation on June 18, the special counsel previously sought a separate 48-hour arrest warrant last month. However, that request was denied by the Seoul court after Yoon indicated his willingness to cooperate with questioning.

Yoon declined to respond to a third police summons on June 19 related to allegations that he ordered the presidential security service to prevent a January attempt to arrest him and to delete information from secure phones used by three military commanders.

Yoon was detained at the presidential office on January 15 and formally indicted on January 26 as a suspected leader of insurrection. He was released on March 8 after prosecutors chose not to challenge the court’s decision approving his release.

On April 4, South Korea’s constitutional court upheld a motion to impeach Yoon over his mishandled martial law attempt in December 2024, officially removing him from the presidency.
